UAE customs runs on a facility called Transfer of Residence. If you're bringing used personal household goods into the country as a new resident, they clear without duty, no separate import license needed for most items. The catch is the word "used." If your shipment includes anything still in its original box or with tags on, customs can treat it as new merchandise and apply 5% VAT on its declared value. We ask you what's new versus used before we pack, so nothing gets flagged at the port that you weren't expecting.

A Transfer of Residence exemption only applies once your UAE residence visa or Emirates ID is active, so the paperwork timing matters. The most expensive mistake is packing new purchases with the tags still on.
