Home Shifting Checklist — Week-by-Week Moving Plan

Moving without a solid plan leads to last-minute chaos, forgotten items, and high stress.

This interactive checklist covers everything you need to do, starting 4 weeks before your move all the way through to settling into your new home.

4 Weeks Before

Book packers and movers: Get written quotes and compare at least 3 verified options.Decide what to keep: Sort your belongings into 'keep', 'sell', and 'donate' piles.Notify management: Inform your society or building management about the move date to reserve lift/truck access.School transfers: Request the transfer of school records if you have children.

2 Weeks Before

Start packing non-essentials: Books, off-season clothes, and decor items.Procure supplies: Buy extra packing tape, markers, and bubble wrap if you are packing personal items.Address updates: Update your address for Aadhaar, bank accounts, and e-commerce deliveries.Utility disconnections: Arrange the disconnection or transfer of your landline, DTH/cable, and cooking gas.

Move Week

Confirm logistics: Re-confirm the mover's arrival time and the truck size.Pack a 'first night' bag: Pack clothes, toiletries, and essentials for 2–3 days so you don't have to open big boxes immediately.Appliance prep: Defrost your fridge 24 hours before move day.Drain appliances: Ensure your washing machine is completely drained of water.Secure valuables: Keep jewelry, laptops, and important documents with you—do not hand these to the movers.

Move Day

Supervise: Be present throughout the process. Don't leave the movers alone in your home.Final walkthrough: Check every room, cupboard, and balcony before the movers leave the old house.Verify loading: Ensure all items on the inventory list are loaded before you sign the dispatch document.Document condition: Take photos of fragile or highly valuable items before they are loaded to help with potential insurance claims.

After You Move In

Delivery check: Inspect all items upon delivery and note any damage on the receipt BEFORE signing.Test appliances: Plug in and test major appliances before the movers leave.Set up essentials: Prioritize setting up the beds, bathroom, and kitchen first.Local notifications: Notify the local LPG supplier, milkman, and newspaper vendor of your arrival.Police verification: Register with the local police or RWA if required by your new society.
